“The University in the Lives of its Pupils” – Christopher Townsend talk, Tuesday 9th April, 5-6pm”

Professor Christopher Townsend, Senior Lecturer in Media Arts at the University of London, speaks about the changing concept of the university as a place of scholarship. In his talk Chris will discuss the cultural meaning of education and scholarship, but not, as with Jacques Derrida, through a reference to optical experience so much as to embodied space.

Part of a series of events celebrating Ruth Proctor’s exhibition Falling Backwards, the talk will compliment Proctor’s artwork which considers the university campus as an inhabited learning space.

SCVA lecture theatre, booking not required, free event with a complimentary drink on arrival.

“Moderism through Wyndham Lewis” –  5th March, 5-6pm

Composition 1913 by Wyndham Lewis 1882-1957

Composition 1913 by Wyndham Lewis 1882-1957

Professor Paul Edwards gives a personal account of his research into the painting and writing of Wyndham Lewis. Lewis was an early champion of modernist architecture, seeing within it the transformative effect it could have on people’s lives. His work is one of the sources of inspiration for Denys Lasdun’s designs for the University of East Anglia campus. Lewis’s utopianism was offset by scepticism, however, and this talk gives complexity to his changing thoughts about the role of art in shaping consciousness.

SCVA lecture theatre, free, booking not required.
